Dear D187,
I want to thank everyone for their unbelievable hard work, creativity, flexibility and patience since the district transitioned to e-learning six weeks ago. This is staff appreciation week, so please take a moment to send a note of thanks to a teacher or staff member that has helped your child during this crisis.
I want to make sure you have all of the information you need so if you have questions about or beyond what’s written below, please reach out to your students’ teachers or principals.
All Illinois public schools will be closed for the rest of the 2019-2020 school year While we are all disappointed about the Governor’s decision to close the schools through the end of this school year, we understand it is necessary to protect the health and safety of our students, families and staff. Our great team of educators are working even harder to make sure they connect with students and families – and please be sure you and your students stay in touch with them. We have also cancelled the first session of summer school for June. We will make a decision about the second half of summer school, scheduled for July, later this month.
We are working on a plan to allow students to get into the buildings to collect their things and return textbooks. Your principal will update you on the dates, times and procedure for this as soon as the plan is ready.
Meals & learning packets. Meals and learning packets are:
- Distributed Monday and Thursday, 8:30-10:30 at Alexander Elementary, Forrestal Elementary, and NCCHS
- Delivered throughout the community on Mondays and Thursdays – see the D187 website for drop off locations and times – https://d187.org/meal-delivery-service-schedule/
Green Bay Construction Work will begin on Green Bay this coming week and the building will be closed as of Tuesday, May 12th. Monday, May 11th will be the last day meals and learning packets can be picked up at this location.
E-learning. Please be sure your students are keeping up with their assignments and staying in touch with their teachers through email and Google classroom. E-learning is essential to continuing our students’ education. Please see the district’s e-learning page of our website here: https://d187.org/e-learning/ The school year ends May 29th.
Social emotional support. These are extremely challenging times for everyone and no one should struggle alone. Please reach out to D187’s counselors – they are here to help students and families. Also, there are several terrific community partners providing mental health, food distribution and other types of assistance:
School registration. Parents may now register new and returning students online for the 2020-2021 school year. All children must be officially registered for school by a parent or legal guardian. Families can start the registration process by visiting https://d187.org/district/d/re... to access the SchoolMint online portal. A valid email address is required to register. You may register by using a personal computer or cell phone. Residency verification documents may be:
- mailed to your student’s school
- submitted electronically via SchoolMint or
- placed in the newly installed drop boxes at the district office – 2000 Lewis Avenue, North Chicago. Click here for more information and to register.
Seniors, Class of 2020 Please know we are working on a plan to celebrate your major accomplishments and graduation on May 29th! In the meantime, please reach out to your counselors – there’s lots to talk about – and take a look at my video message to all of you found here.
Thanks to all of our teachers, social workers, counselors and staff members who have gone above and beyond to create learning in this very different environment and to support our students in whatever ways they need. And thanks to our students and families who have also risen to the challenge of teaching and learning at home all while they are dealing with these very difficult times. We are in this – and will get through this – together!
